In a recent development in the gambling industry, two former Charlotte Hornet players joined the president of their team, Fred Whitefield, by going to lawmakers’ doorsteps to request the expansion of legal sports gambling in North Carolina.
Dell Curry and Muggsy Bogues had a healthy conversation about the financial benefits the state can have with legalized gambling. However, opponents feel it’s a bad bet.
Don Waddell, the general manager and the president of the Carolina Hurricanes, was present to support the gambling bill.
He said gambling is something that happens everywhere. Therefore, it is best to legalize it. It would help in getting rid of next-door neighbor bookies and make Players safer. It would also be a win-win situation for everyone.
In March, WRAL Investigates presented a series of reports commissioned by the North Carolina Education Lottery, helping to examine the impact on the revenue from gambling in the state. It also found that legalizing gambling can benefit the state with millions of dollars. The report further stated that illegal gambling in the US is a multi-billion industry.
However, John Rustin, the president of North Carolina, has a different opinion on this. According to him, this kind of money would bring corruption for both- North Carolina’s values and the government.
According to his studies for more than two decades reveal that the more gambling takes place, the more citizens will indulge in the activity. John further stated that Gambling brings in many issues, including bankruptcy, domestic violence, and other issues.
Waddell, countering this statement, said legalizing gambling will help the state with additional revenue. Moreover, the PNC Arena will be a hub for betting and games. He further stated that it would be great to see gambling at the PNC Arena in Raleigh throughout the year.
